Trending Now: Bringing the Outside in With Natural Materials

According to both Insider and Vogue, natural and nature-inspired surfaces and items are the thing right now.

On Insider, interior designer Kate Diaz is quoted saying, "Wood, stone, and leather are going to be big” because they “bring the outdoors in.”

Likewise, Vogue has a blurb from Athena Calderone, which says, “With more time spent indoors than ever before, we’re all seeking to strengthen our connection with nature. This has simultaneously inspired a resurgence in natural surfaces—think stoneware, terracotta, marble, and travertine being used across the board from backsplashes to bathtubs, furniture, and decorative objects. The raw, porous, imperfect nature of these organic materials adds depth, soul, and visual intrigue while also mimicking the calming, restorative ambiance of the outdoors.”

While I’m not the biggest fan of the trend cycle, I do love to investigate lots of different styles and design philosophies. We at the ORC® are strong believers in sticking to what you love and designing for yourself, but it’s always fun to know what’s out there and maybe bring bits and pieces of other styles and trends into your designs. We all contain multitudes!

So, without further ado, here are some wonderful uses of natural materials in past ORC® projects.

This organic and chic office seems like such a calming space to work. The sisal rug really ties the space together and is a lovely contrast with the dark shelves.

The tri-tone palette of black, white, and neutrals looks absolutely fabulous here, especially thanks to the many textures that create depth while sticking to the color scheme.

Using lots of natural materials in a window seat area makes so much sense, because it bridges your view of outside with your surroundings inside. This window seat is brimming with natural materials, but the gorgeous linens definitely steal the show.

This amazing jute rug adds texture and softness to the space without drawing too much attention. Plus, it pairs perfectly with all those gorgeous plants!

If you’re someone who loves a sleek, clean, and minimal workspace, you can still make it feel warm and alive by bringing in a few natural elements. The natural wood fluted drawers are such a wonderful detail in this space.

The wicker barstools bring the perfect amount of natural warmth into this bright, minimal, sleek kitchen. Sometimes just a small amount is all that’s necessary to create a nice contrast.

A beautiful leather headboard was the perfect mid-tone between the dark wall color with the light bedding.

Roman clay has been making a splash in the past couple years, and it’s another great example of bringing natural materials indoors. It can give a surface depth and life that flat paint cannot.

Natural materials always work wonderfully in a moody space. For example, this leather sofa and this room both feel so warm, steadfast, and inviting.

On the other side of the spectrum, here is a gorgeous leather sofa bringing a touch of ruggedness into a more bright, feminine space.
