STORY & GRAPHIC BY VIRGINIA BESHEARS
Hanging chairs date all the way back to 1957; the original hanging egg chair was designed by Nanna Ditzel to reduce the number of furniture legs cluttering a space visually while still being aesthetically pleasing. Given the huge revival of mid-century modern styles in the past couple of decades, it makes sense that hanging chairs have been having a bit of a moment recently. They’re whimsical, space-efficient, and versatile. If you’re looking to add a splash of playfulness to your room, check out these One Room Challenge projects for hanging chair inspiration.
Reem’s 13 year old daughter was very involved in the process of updating her bedroom for the One Room Challenge, and she told her mom that a hanging chair was a “must-have.” They wanted the overall vibe of the room to be “serene and simple,” which Reem definitely achieved with the light, minimal color palette. The hanging chair and shag pillows bring in a bit of fun that keeps the room looking youthful.
Moody Modern Eclectic

Hanging chairs are incredibly versatile and can suit any space depending on what is paired with it. Megan of Less House More Home’s living room is modern eclectic with a moody, natural vibe. The hanging chair feels fun, but still fits into her space, especially with the high contrast, black and white blanket and pillow she paired with it.
Light & Bright
Lauren Koster elected to paint this hanging chair, featured in her beautiful sunroom. With all those big windows surrounding it, the light streams through the gaps in the white rattan, and the chair feels airy and light. It is perfect for the bright space that bridges the outside and inside.
Green Nursery
This hanging chair is an incredibly fun addition to Rachel of DIY in PDX’s nursery. Her hanging chair is a vintage piece from her grandparents’ home in Arizona. It saw lots of sunshine for several decades and came to her very dry and worn, and she did a great job reviving it with beeswax wood polish and conditioner. The wood color she ended up with looks perfect with all those fantastic house plants.
