Impressive DIY Furniture Flips from the Recent Spring ‘22 ORC®
STORY BY VIRGINIA BESHEARS, PHOTO BY SPACEJOY
Sometimes the star of a space was found on the side of the road, or Facebook Marketplace for $25, or even already in your own house. There are so many wonderful gems out there ready to be rescued and put to good use. If you spy something a little rough or not quite right for the space, don’t be afraid to snag it—a good paint stripper and varnish is truly unstoppable. Below are some inspiring furniture flip projects from the most recent ORC® that showcase how far a piece of furniture can go with a little bit of time and elbow grease.
Emily decided to flip her existing vanity so she could save her budget for other big projects in this gorgeous bathroom. She gave it new life with semi-gloss paint, fluted trim on the drawers, braided molding on the edges, and new hardware. Lastly, she added a marble countertop and backsplash. In addition to saving money on a new piece of furniture, Emily also avoided having to deal with any plumbing, which is always one of the most stressful parts of renovating a bathroom. The updated vanity is absolutely gorgeous and hardly looks like the vanity she started with!

During her kitchen transformation, Kathleen decided to paint her fridge (and dishwasher, not pictured here) to match her newly blue cabinets. The photo on the left is mid-way through the ORC and the photo on the right is the finale. You can see from the photos what a huge difference the coat of paint does for the room. The fridge doesn’t catch your eye anymore and it looks built-in and very custom!

The former owners of Brooke’s new cottage left behind the wood dresser pictured on the left. During her bedroom project, she painted it, gave it fresh hardware, and (quite ingeniously) built it into the wall. It fits right in with her transformed bedroom, and the fact that it’s built in really elevates the whole room. How resourceful!
Maggie gave her 20-year-old IKEA console quite a makeover during her ORC office project. She gave it a coat of gorgeous red paint, applied gold leaf to the glass doors, added door overlays, and swapped the wooden legs out for metal ones. I never would have guessed the finished product was a classic IKEA console before reading her post.

The inspiration for Erin’s beautiful bathroom makeover came from this adorable sink she found on Facebook Marketplace for $75, which had been pulled out of an old farmhouse and was estimated to be about 75 years old. The sink was in great condition and just required a couple of hours working with Barkeeper’s Friend to remove the rust spots. The sink is the star of the bathroom and just goes to show that rescuing a great find rather than buying something new can bring so much charm into a space.

Becky amazingly found this fantastic 1960s dresser on the side of the road and was able to restore and flip it for her son’s room. The project involved lots and lots of paint stripping, and she managed to save the veneer on the outside of the dresser and seal it with a water based polyurethane. The veneer on the drawers was not salvageable, so she painted them a lovely dark blue. After a last round of repairing cracks and chips, the dresser looks absolutely amazing.

Jennifer’s 100-year-old built-in hutch isn’t technically a furniture flip, as she didn’t alter it at all, but it’s definitely a testament to the value of preserving old gems. For her kitchen/breakfast room project, she demoed basically everything in the space besides the hutch, and man was it the right call. It adds so much character and even a bit of gravitas to this gorgeous kitchen!
