B&A: A Sophisticated, Vintage Makeover for This Tween Boy’s Bedroom

BEFORE & AFTER

Although Tracy’s (@4009decorates) 11-year-old son’s bedroom was already fantastic, it had a kid-like, playful vibe that he had outgrown. Micah expressed his desire for a more grown-up room that reflected his current interests and personality, or, more specifically, hunting lodge themed decoration and "cool old stuff" (aka vintage finds).

So, Tracy tackled transforming his room during this past ORC event, and she absolutely nailed it.

Micah's room started out as a vibrant, lively space full of childhood charm, but it didn't quite match the mature look he was now seeking. To make way for the new design, Tracy sold all of his current furniture, except the bed, on Facebook Marketplace. She then sourced vintage furniture pieces from the same platform, spending under $250 in total.

Tracy's idea of color drenching—painting everything from the ceiling to the trim to the windowsills in green—gave the room a moody, cozy, vintage vibe that both she and Micah loved.

The focal point of the room is definitely the incredible gallery wall surrounding the bed. Tracy had been collecting art and vintage frames for months from antique stores, estate sales, and Facebook Marketplace, so she had a treasure trove of items ready to go. To add even more charm, Tracy installed a picture rail about a foot from the ceiling to hang art with brass hooks.

One standout piece of the gallery wall, the deer, was a very creative DIY. During a girls' trip in 2020, she came across an adorable brass-mounted deer head in their Airbnb. After discovering it cost over $600 online, she decided to make her own. Tracy bought a resin deer head from Amazon, painted it gold with Rub n Buff to mimic antique brass, and added glasses and a pipe to match the Airbnb inspiration. It looks at home with all the other hunting-lodge-esque art, but it adds such a unique pop of personality and fun!

The finishing touches included an olive tree for greenery and texture, and dramatic curtains. Micah absolutely loves his new room, and according to Tracy, she might be redoing Micah’s envious older brother’s bedroom next ORC!

Tracy's creative approach and thoughtful execution turned Micah's room into a sophisticated, personalized space that perfectly balances vintage charm with modern comfort.
