Community Spotlight: The Shady Gal on How Plants Bring Life into Interiors
We asked 9 time ORC participant Juliette (@the_shady_gal) to tell us about her absolutely legendary houseplant collection, and what role plants play in her interior design.
Oh...the plant collection. Plants are my therapy. It all started about six years ago when I brought a few in from the outside at the end of summer–I couldn't face seeing them die off. From those first few, I just fell in love with the life they give to a room. The vibe absolutely changes, and I believe that happens with real plants, or even faux plants. They bring dimension and color–a connection with nature. They add unique shape to design, from those that stand up straight, to others that trail–add all of that up with the plant pots you choose, and everything combines for a beautiful little design moment.
Real plants can be funny little creatures, though, and I think I really started collecting them the more I learned about the lessons they can teach people. They all have their own personalities–some change color with more or less light, others move throughout the course of the day. They lean toward the light they need. Some curl up at night. They'll also die if you give them too much love, aka water. They'll only blossom when they are exactly where they need to be.
My plant obsession? I've always been a sucker for variegation–different color zones throughout the same leaf. Philodendron Brasil, String of Hearts, Prayer Plants. It amazes me that nature continuously creates such incredible patterning and colors. Mother Nature–the best landscape artist we could ever ask for.
