Baskets are an icon of easy but stylish storage. A nice woven basket will almost never look out of place and can even enhance a space by adding warmth and texture.

We all have items we use on a daily basis that we also don’t necessarily want to look at every day, like lotion containers or remote controls. A strategically-placed basket can effectively reduce clutter, keep items conveniently close by, and function as a stylish accessory.

Pantry and food storage areas are some of the quickest to get messy. Who among us hasn’t haphazardly shoved newly purchased groceries into a cabinet to “deal with later,” and then never dealt with them later?

The key to keeping a pantry area clean and organized is designating a spot for everything, and making it easy to put things where they belong.

Clear glass and plastic containers are a favorite for pantry dry goods because they look so uniform and sleek but still make it easy to see what you’re grabbing.

As much as I love the look of dry goods in clear containers, I am not the kind of person who can commit to refilling the containers after every grocery run. If you’re like me, consider using opaque bins (see image above, on the righthand side). Bins will keep food items corralled and you won’t have to look at all the busy food packaging, and all you have to do to keep organized is toss your items into the correct bin.

Another storage solution to consider is getting creative with unused space, like under the stairs, or a random alcove, or empty corners. And, while creating a gorgeous built-in from scratch would be ideal, that isn’t realistic or possible for many of us.

There are endless options for making the most of dead space beyond built-in storage— it just takes some creativity. A rolling bar cart or etagere are both great options for filling dead space, but whatever you put on them may have to be styled. Something shallow like an IKEA Billy Bookcase can fit into an alcove without protruding too far into the room.

If you’re interested in filling dead space with something like a bookcase or etagere, keep an eye out on Facebook Marketplace. There’s a good chance you’ll find something great that’s the exact size you’re looking for.
