Using chair rail height molding in dining rooms dates back centuries, when it was used to protect walls from being scuffed by the dining chairs. This absolutely amazing dining room is by Dabito of Old Brand New. The way he paired the classical molding with fun, bold colors and abstract art creates the perfect formal yet joyful space.

This incredibly charming living room is by Jennifer of The Pink Pagoda. The addition of the molding elevates the room without pulling attention from the other elements. Using molding to create interest in a smaller space rather than something like wallpaper is also wise because it won’t shrink your space. The room feels so cheerful, full of charm, and sophisticated.

This gorgeous living room is by Gretchen of Kentucky Rose Designs. The molding definitely makes the room feel formal and elevated, while her furniture and color choices balance that with a bit of coziness. Gretchen installed the moldings herself, which is no small feat. Molding isn’t a foolproof DIY; it takes a lot of patience and precision. She’s got a great, in-depth explanation of the process here if you’re interested in giving it a whirl yourself.

Tripura of Craft My World created this airy, fresh master bedroom. That refreshing green paint makes for a great accent wall, but adding the picture frame moldings on top of that just takes it above and beyond. The smaller proportions of the moldings keep the room from feeling overly formal and work perfectly with the other elements in the room. Tripura also added the moldings herself!

Jewel of Jeweled Interiors created such a show stopping moment by filling her picture frame molding with a wallpaper mural. Balancing a very traditional wallpaper design and classical moldings with modern elements like the sofa, abstract art, and the light fixture makes for an incredibly fresh and cool space.
